About this collection

A protocolo notarial is a bound register in which a notary recorded instruments issued under official authority — royal and audiencia titles, licences to hold office, mandamientos, confirmations, and cédulas. The registers held here document the administrative life of Nueva Galicia: appointments of alcaldes mayores, land grants, ecclesiastical licences, and the transfer of official power.

This finding aid is derived from OCR transcriptions of the original catalog volumes held by the Archivo de Instrumentos Públicos del Estado de Jalisco. Text is machine-readable and may contain errors. Each entry identifies the instrument number within its libro, the type, key persons, the date, and the folio reference.
