Since the original census record is the primary record, it should always be consulted for final determination of information. Portions of the original census are badly damaged. The households are unnumbered, the persons are grouped by categories of marital status, of age 14 and above, under the age of 14, widowers, widows, unmarried (male and female) and slaves. Only the head of the household is named; the spouses and children are not named but they are enumerated. The racial classification of the persons are also recorded: Españoles, Mestisos and Yndios. There are no occupations recorded and no record of where the residents originated from, i.e. were they natives of the area, elsewhere in Nueva Vizcaya, or beyond Nueva Vizcaya. As noted above, portions of the original census are badly damaged, some portions are very legible and some portions are faint. This researcher simply did not have the confidence in reading portions of the census. I have put in question marks in these cases. In cases where I had some doubt in reading the record, I inserted the following “(?)” after the name or word. The census records found at the University of Texas at El Paso library actually contains nine censuses for the various settlements in the vicinity of the Villa de Chihuahua, Nueva Vizcaya. The census for the Villa de Chihuahua has been transcribed and indexed and is available for purchase from the Colorado Society of Hispanic Genealogy. To date, the census for Chuviscar, the census for Nombre de Dios and the census for San Andres have been published as articles in the Colorado Hispanic Genealogist. I will work on the other census records as time permits or if a CSHG member wants to volunteer, I would be willing to work with them. I have chosen to leave the transcription in Spanish and challenge the reader to consult the various resources that are on-line or consult the other Nueva Vizcaya census records that I have published to render an English translation.
